Katharina Klewinghaus at 3. Porn Film Festival Berlin

As someone who was addicted to slasher films as a child in the 1980s, and who went on to read a ton of feminist and queer theory at university in the 1990s, I’ve long been fascinated with the contradictory ways that women and sex are portrayed in the horror genre. It is a subject that has fascinated academics throughout the last decade, as well, and one that’s been in dire need of a documentary treatment for some time. Now, thanks to Katharina Klewinghaus, star of Bruce LaBruce’s new film Otto; or, Up with Dead People!, that documentary has arrived: Science of Horror, which was screened this weekend at the Porn Film Festival.

Klewinghaus had the savvy to bring together some of the more well known directors of the horror genre, as well as a range of writers and academics who have illuminated the subject through their work. While you might not agree with all of the arguments being put forth, Klewinghaus never appears to take sides and none of the points ever seem belabored – a sign of great filmmaking. Considering that this is Klewinghaus’s first feature, this is quite an impressive feat.

Women were largely relegated to one of two roles in the strictly codified proceedings of the horror film – the studious virgin/hero or the party-harty whore/victim. If I have one minor criticism of the film, it is that the (largely male) filmmakers interviewed failed to address the topic of gender. While they were eager to speak about the function of sex in the films – drawing comparisons to the language of pornography – it would have been interesting to hear their thoughts on the function of gender. Were they conscious of what they were doing in relegating the role of women in their filmic universes, or were their values so engrained in the cultural climate of America in the 1980s, wherein the moral majority was forcing its “family values” propaganda on the population, that they felt it necessary to reinforce these values through their art?

That aside, Science of Horror is one of the most intriguing documentaries I’ve seen this year.

3. PornfilmfestivalBerlin am Sonntag erfolgreich zu Ende gegangen –
Die Preisträgerinnen und Preisträger

Nach 5 Tagen voller aufregender, erotischer, überraschender und innovativer Filme aus aller Welt ist am Sonntag, den 26.10.2008 das 3. PornfilmfestivalBerlin 2008 zu Ende gegangen. Insgesamt 2.800 Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauer sahen die insgesamt 105 Lang- und Kurzfilme des Festivalprogramms in den Berliner Festivalkinos Moviemento, Eiszeit und Xenon. Zu den Vorstellungen erschienen zudem mehr als 50 Gäste (RegisseurInnen, ProduzentInnen, DarstellerInnen) und weitere 100 akkreditierte JournalistInnen und FestivalorganisatorInnen aus aller Welt. Weitere 2000 Besucher konnten wir in unserer Nachtbar begrüßen, die jeden Abend im Anschluss an das Kinoprogramm eine bunte Mischung aus künstlerischen und musikalischen Performances anbot.
Im Rahmen der feierlichen Abschlussveranstaltung am Sonntagabend im Moviemento-Kino wurden die zwei Preise des Festivals vergeben. Eine Jury, bestehend aus den Filmschaffenden Manon des Gryeux (Paris), Charles Lum (New York) und Susanne Sachsse (Berlin) vergab den Preis des Internationalen Kurzfilmwettbewerbs, und Festivalgründer und Kurator Jürgen Brüning selbst vergab erstmals den maleflixxx.tv Award an den besten schwulen Film des Festivals.

Die Hauptdarstellerin Claudette bereicherte das Festival mit ihrer Anwesenheit, und der Film der Regisseurin Sylvie Cachin zeigte das Portrait einer unermüdlichen Kämpferin für die sexuellen Selbstbestimmungsrechte jedes Menschen jenseits festgelegter Genderkategorien und sexueller Orientierung.


Der Dank des Festivalteams gilt all unseren Gästen und Zuschauern, die erneut dafür gesorgt haben, dass das PornfilmfestivalBerlin auch im dritten Jahr in einer so freundlichen wie inspirierenden, so kreativen wie kommunikativen Atmosphäre stattfinden konnte. We don’t do Porn(festival)

About films that are not in the festival

The Porn Film Festival is called so, because we like to say things as they are. Although many films in the festival aren’t even porn in the traditional sense. However we knew all along that the p-word in the title wouldn’t bring a mass audience to the festival. But the bluntness allows a target audience to go for it and be surprised about all the things that we think porn can be today.
Much to our surprise though, was the fact that the p-word is also a big “no no” for filmmakers and producers, even if their films are pornographic or deal with the porn-industry.
The selection committee was thrilled to be able to see some very interesting, witty and creative approaches in these films and was sure our festival would be the perfect stage to present this work. But apparently the maker, sales agents and marketing people disagreed.

For example we would have loved to show Australian feature film “The Band”, which combines the means of a feature film with explicit sex scenes and on top, being made from a female perspective by director Anna Brownfield. But the filmmaker had other plans with it.

Even though the documentary “Stalags – Holocaust and Pornography in Israel” by Ari Libsker has got the word “pornography” in its title the filmmaker refused to be connected in any way with a porn film festival. Sad, because we planned to put it as a centerpiece of the festival in order to discuss the very controversy issue of Nazi-terror-porn being popular in Israel, especially amongst former concentration-camp inmates.

Porn in the title and nothing else in the content we found in the German documentary “9 to 5 days of Porn” by Jens Hoffmann. This very revealing look behind the scenes of the porn industry worldwide would have been perfect for the festival, but the producers decided to rather compete with many other documentaries for other more mainstream festivals.

The story of the notorious swinger club Plato in New York and the excessive sex parties of straight couples in the 70ies and 80ies – inspired by the gay men’s sex culture of the time – as told in the interesting documentary “American Swing” would have been interesting to our audience, we thought. The filmmakers Matthew Kaufman and Jon Hart however preferred to offer it to other festivals.

And finally one documentary with one of the highest artistic qualities “Jan Saudek” about the Czech photographer also didn’t want to be part of our festival. Although it portrays the rebellious and challenging work of the erotic photographer Jan Saudek the filmmakers didn’t feel that the message of the films is anyhow obligating and were offering it to other festivals instead.

We can only express our deep regret about all these missed opportunities and wish to express our highest gratitude to all those who are not only making non-mainstream and daring, challenging films but also show these at festivals with the same goal.

What Does Feminist Porn Look Like?

Audacia RayIn the last few years, feminist, independent, queer, and alt pornographies have become a visible and viable part of the adult industry, to the excitement of many porn fans, performers, and producers. But there are still a lot of arguments about whether or not porn can be feminist and ethical, and what exactly that looks like.
In this workshop, we’ll deconstruct the meaning of feminist porn and then try to put it back together again in photos and a video that will be produced during the session. We’ll evaluate some examples of sexual media and discuss whether or not they are feminist, and how to tell whether or not they are ethically produced. Then, we’ll set up a scene with a live model (the workshop leader!) and experiment with shooting in a feminist and ethical way. Will what we make challenge assumptions about feminism and porn? Is it possible to make images by ethical and feminist producers look different than other images?
Participants are encouraged to bring their cameras and come prepared to shoot either stills or video. Amateurs are more than welcome!
Audacia Ray will be serving as both workshop leader and muse for the media produced during the session. She is the editor of Village Voice sexuality blog NakedCity.com, director and producer of the award-winning porn film “The Bi Apple”, author of the book “Naked on the Internet”, and a (mostly) retired model and sex worker.

Wendy Delorme + KaCoSóniaMore than “just” a novel, Quatrième Génération is a smart, sensitive, hilarious and poetic queer feminist manifesto, published in France by Editions Grasset in 2007. In this book, a young, lucid and ironic female narrator tells us the tale of queer love and four generations of women in her family, all considered “crazy”.

Wendy Delorme is a French writer who likes to tell her sex life, make up sex stories, undress in public and do public sex. She believes in pornography to save the world.

KaCoSónia is the french spokenword artist of Berlin, and as a poet possesses a veritable word pulping machine in her head. With sensuality, verbal dexterity, dark humour, a fiery temperament and an infectious delight in wordplay, this perfom-writer gives us food for thought on our bodies and cities, gender and sexuality, appearance and reality… and leaves no one unmoved. She wrote two books of short stories published in France by Editions Au Diable Vauvert.

“The Privacy Of Porn: All Is Intimate, Nothing Is True”

Etymology claims that porn means to talk about whores and prostitution. In this sense we’re reaching out for off-topic levels as we focus on private porn (almost an oxymoron, don’t you think?). Never mind if private porn protagonists get some allowances for their contributions, or if “private porn” is less (or even more) porn than mere conventional products – to be or not to be … the one you are, that’s the question (from the “private” actor’s POV). Truth, but a deceiving one, authenticity, but a false one, all intimacy – ruined? What is left of “private” when there’s a camera around, some director or even some emcee to conduct? We may draw nonpoint lines of demarcation between private and public, between un-, semi- and commercial – and discard them again: From pure talking about the unspeakable (own) sexlife (“Herzfeuer”), the discovery of everybody’s living room as a commercially fertile niche (Harry S. Morgan), some would-be new approaches to gain viewing pleasure by the exposure of personality (Erika Lust), to the online excrescences of sites like “Beautiful Agony” or “yuvutu”. Freedom for all – or just another reflex on industrial products? A broadening of porn territory – as, all in all, no differences are to be seen anymore anyway? My assumption: with the call for “action” all intimacy, even authenticity, escapes the set. But – perhaps we disclose hidden hints for some antitheses together?

Stefan HöltgenSeit den 1970er Jahren, also der Blütezeit des Pornofilms, hat es immer wieder Versuche gegeben, diesen mit anderen Filmgenres zu kreuzen. Neben zumeist Kriminalfilm- und Thriller-Hybriden sind es vor allem Horrorstoffe, die besonders häufig in erzählenden Pornofilmen zu finden sind. Der Vortrag versucht einen Blick auf einige Vertreter dieser Horror-Porno-Hybride zu werfen und dabei vor allem die Monsterfilme, in sich denen die klassischen Figuren des Horrorkinos unversehens in Pornotopia wiederfinden, vorzustellen. Im Zentrum steht die Frage: Was haben die Monster und der Sex als filmische Phänomene gemeinsam und warum ist ihr Aufeinandertreffen im Pornofilm so überaus plausibel?
Stefan Höltgen (Jahrgang 1971) studierte zwischen 1996 und 2000 Germanistik, Philosophie, Soziologie und Medienwissenschaften an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Seit 2003 lebt und arbeitet er in Bonn als freier Journalist und betreibt dort ein Dissertationsprojekt zu “Medien- und Gewaltdiskursen im authentischen Serienmörderfilm” an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn. Neben Buchpublikationen und Herausgeberschaften schreibt er regelmäßig Kritiken, Rezensionen und Artikel für Magazine und Zeitschriften wie epd Film, Der Schnitt, telepolis, IASL u. a. “There First. Presenting The “Slavesex” And “Pain” Movie Series”

There First.It’s very easy to be kinky in 2008: there are clubs, associations and dungeons for rent; there’s an ample and very varied filmography, covering just about any kink you can imagine; there are websites to educate and entertain you, made by real practitioners for genuinely interested people. But there was a time, not long ago, in the eighties, in which being into very intense kinds of love, like BDSM or extreme fetishes, was very much a niche thing, when fetish cinema was very underground.
Porno at the time was mostly fiction-based, it had a plot and – unfortunately – actual acting bits. The editing, and sometimes dubbing, was often so extreme (and blatantly unlikely) that it was hard to get any feel for the situation: lousy dialogue, genital close ups, screams, the customary cumshot (not yet facial) and little else. Some German producers, like Dino, sometimes inserted some different action (like anal, pissing, or light BDSM) in mainstream features just to spice things up.
Two of the first widely distributed BDSM series, “Slavesex” and “Pain”, were in German, and mostly featured a couple, plus occasionally someone else. Their screen names were Anita, or Anita Feller, or Martina S (for Sklavin), and Master Günther. It’s very difficult to gather information about dates, but I believe it was in the early eighties. These movies were radically different from anything else on the market at that time, as far as I can tell. They had no music but strictly live sound, little or no editing, almost no close-ups but much wider angles; they weren’t shot on movie sets but in what looked like a well equipped dungeon. The people weren’t “actors”, and you could tell right away: which porn actress would be hanged by her tits – and look like she’s into it? The movies obviously showed a dynamic, a relationship, and an action that would probably happen even if the camera wasn’t there. The shooting style was more documentaristic than porno, and it would occasionally zoom in to capture faces, not crotches. The overall package, from the stark boxes to the bare credits and the abrupt ends, smelled like underground, although it was very obvious that these people weren’t post-punks, didn’t listen to heavy metal or wear rubber in public: they were very much into BDSM, but regular people otherwise.
It’s hard to calculate the impact of these films on the BDSM scene, but I believe it’s huge. At the time, this was the only credible BDSM one could see in action, comfortably at home, even in smaller towns; and if it’s true that porno educates (or miseducates) people about sex, this is ten times true for the so called “niche porno”. So one could guess that they showed first what BDSM (and more) was about to a large number of people in the world (including myself).
Anita / Martina then moved on to a brief but very varied solo career, appearing in quite a few German and Dutch productions during the second half of the 80s / early 90s (again, it’s very hard to gather information on dates). She never did straight porn thou: her parts were always fetish, or outright kinky. Sometimes extremely so. There are movies, both in the “Slavesex/Pain” series and in other productions, in which she performs things that probably had never been filmed before (including genuine tears and kisses on the cheeks – unheard of in porno), and some of those performances still hold as extreme after so many years (eons, if you consider the digital revolution). But this lady had class to burn, a style which to me is still unsurpassed today; at times she did look kinky, very extreme, even way over the top, but never gross or sloppy, or even nasty: she looked extra natural, just the way it should be. This woman’s filmography reads like a history of alternative sexuality of the last 15 years – but 15 years before.
The two films presented here belong to the early “Slavesex/Pain” series. They are shown as an example of seminal porno, as amazing films in their own right and to give credit and visibility to authors that opened a way that is very, very much in fashion in 2008 – but that they walked 25 years ago.
Sergio Messina (b. Rome, 1959) is a very unusual character in the Italian artistic and media landscape. Radio maker, musician (with a top 20 hit as a producer), journalist, performer, sound designer and teacher, his work is often described as “seminal”. His latest show is Realcore, the digital porno revolution – a presentation about online amateur erotica. Mark Dery called him “The Margaret Mead of alt-sex”.
At the moment, besides freelance writing, teaching (sound design and history of Pop cultures), lecturing and occasional music gigs, Messina coordinates the Sound Design school at Ied, Istituto Europeo di Design, in Milano. Da zahlreiche Pink Filme und Roman Pornos Sexualität und Gewalt verschmelzen, können diese als Teil des ero guro- (erotic grotesque)-Phänomens gesehen werden. Diese sexualisierte Darstellung von Folter hat kein Äquivalent im Weltkino und betont den künstlich-performativen Charakter dieser Filme. In Japan wird das als asobi (Spiel) betrachtet.
Die billig produzierten Filme besitzen oft einen politischen Subtext und bedienen sich experimenteller Stilmittel. Wie die Filme von WAKAMATSU Koji zeigen, haben Pink Filme das Potenzial radikaler Agitation. Seit den 1960er Jahren drehte Wakamatsu extrem bizarre und gewalttätige Sexfilme mit marxistischem Kontext. Anders als Wakamatsu gelang etwa ISHII Teruo eine Karriere im japanischen Major-Studio Toei. Zugleich können Ishiis technisch hervorragend inszenierte Filme als Paradigma der ero guro-Tendenz gesehen werden.

Bis heute gilt der japanische Sexfilm als einzigartiges künstlerisches Feld der Provokation und des Experiments. Dieser Vortrag will einen Einblick in die weite Welt dieses sehr spezifischen japanischen Genres werfen – mit Blick auf die beim Pornfilmfestival gezeigten Filme.
Dr. phil. habil. Marcus Stiglegger, geboren 1971, lehrt Filmwissenschaft an den Universitäten Mainz und Mannheim, sowie an der Clemson University (USA). Er studierte Filmwissenschaft, Ethnologie, Philosophie und Theaterwissenschaft. 1999 publizierte er seine Doktorarbeit über Faschismus und Sexualität im Film (“Sadiconazista”, 2. Aufl.). Stiglegger gab zahlreiche Bücher über Filmgeschichte, -ästhetik und -theorie heraus. 2006 erschien sein Hauptwerk Ritual & Verführung. Schaulust, Spektakel und Sinnlichkeit zur Verführungstheorie des Films. Neben zahlreichen internationalen Vorträgen arbeitet Stiglegger für die internationale Filmkritikervereinigung FIPRESCI sowie als Autor für die Magazine Filmdienst, epd Film, Splatting Image und Testcard. Seit 2002 gibt er ein eigenes Kulturmagazin :Ikonen: heraus (www.ikonenmagazin.de). Er ist Mitglied des Arbeitskreises ‘The Asian Impact’ der Universität Mainz, Autor für das Brockhaus Lexikon und bereitet gerade ein Buch zum Thema “Japanese Popular Cinema” vor, das 2010 in Edinburgh erscheinen soll.

“Making Sex Media For A Radical Future”

Audacia RayThere are only a handful of companies that own the vast majority of media outlets. These media outlets treat real discussions and information about sexuality with kid gloves. At the same time, they aggressively pursue salacious scandal material and reinforce norms and taboos. Companies that focus on sexuality, like porn companies, also tend to reinforce cultural norms – yet there is a growing contingent of individuals, companies, and art collectives who are breaking the boundaries of sex and gender through sex media production and play. In this talk Audacia Ray, who is a producer and curator of sex media herself, will give a tour to some of these projects as they exist online, on DVD, in print, and in art spaces. The talk asks the questions: how can we challenge mainstream media representations of sex and gender? Is the feminist approach to these topics key? Are commercialism, personal expression, and art at odds with one another? What tools and communities are needed to create alternative sexual media cultures?

Any orgasm is a small echo of the big bang....Dutch film director Willem van Batenburg learned about sex the way we all do, but he is an expert when it comes to writing and making sex movies. His work includes 22 short movies, sold for worldwide distribution, two explicit porno-erotic features “Pruimenbloesem / Prunesblossoms” and “‘n Schot in de roos / Bulls-Eye” (both played to 200,000 spectators each in Dutch theatres) and on top of that he wrote a lot of sex stories for magazine publication.
If he had known during his career as an erotic filmmaker (consequently pornographer) that the best seed (semen) is (are) obtained after looking at pornographic movies, (a research result of the academic hospital Maastricht), then without a doubt he would have been still more motivated than he was already. But reasons such as fascination for the sex-sensual movement, inspiration by the work of the masters of erotic arts and interest in the moral and psychological changes as a result of the sexual revolution have their own value of course.
His extraordinarily woman friendly, very playful, easy-going but lewd and horny features were screened to a cheerful, enthusiastic public during the first two Pornfilmfestivals. This year, being a guest once again, he will show a selection of his short films. The muse from his features (Diana de Koning / Diana Queen, in Holland as famous as Linda Lovelace and Candida Royal together) is in at least four of the shorts. Her multi-orgasm in the picture “Young Girls, Lewd Sales” is a famous highlight of the film, a very authentic scene that is not easy to forget.
These short but powerful films will be preluded by a remix of a lecture he gave last year titled “Twenty-two Elements for the Making of a Pornorotic Lovescene” and a reading from his book about porn “Het komt allemaal weer omhoog – It’s All Going Up Again”. The show will be almost a real time trip to the lust-nostalgia of the sexy and sometimes very sleazy seventies.

“Beyond Pornography – Sexual Culture in Berlin’s “Lab.oratory””

“Berghain” fittingly functions as the name for the bulky building of the old thermal power station in East Berlin’s district Friedrichshain which is not only home to a dance club but also to the “Panoramabar”, and to the sex club “Lab.oratory” on the ground floor. While the place on the one hand successfully exploits the 1920’s fantasy of Berlin as a decadent city in an almost museum-style way, it also gained fame for a revival of gay men’s sexual culture as counter culture, as a place where traditions from the 1970s live on, and where commercial interests are intelligently negotiated with artistic ones and thus open up a space for alternative sexual politics.
In my lecture I will investigate the sexual culture one can enjoy and witness here with respect to questions of relationality and temporality. How does this environment, where the industrial layout perfectly fits the needs of a darkroom, allow for experimenting with social forms and what could be a narrative framework for those? Recent studies in queer theory have spelled out the ethical implications of a queer temporality, that doesn’t use the figure of the child as allegory for the future and as a guarantee for meaning in the realm of the political (Lee Edelman). To rethink our relation to futurity also opens up a space for a new relationality not governed by imaginary appropriations such as pornographic images but to articulate what Leo Bersani has called a “sociability of cruising”. Such thinking keeps a promise from 1970s counter culture alive which in large parts has been covered up by the discourse on HIV/Aids on the one hand and the fight for gay marriage on the other, namely, how does a queer life style provide new forms of living? The Sex Club Lab.oratory in Berlin puts these Foucauldian questions once more to the test: This time it is the Eastern border of the old West, Berlin and not California, where queer sexuality comes to the test.

A.M.G. Physique Shorts

Bob Mizer’s “Athletic Model Guild” (A.M.G.) was the longest-running and first commercially successful male erotic photo studio in history (established in 1948) – and the “body” of work Mizer created (nearly one million individual photographs and films) represent the most prolific documentation of male flesh to date. For decades, Mizer photographed the trade that filed through his own version of the Hollywood Dream Factory. Along with his “Physique Pictorial” magazine, he also created a great number of photos and films.
Here we present a small group of very rare films spanning several decades – which have yet to be released on DVD (acquired directly from the filmmaker shortly before Mizer’s demise in the early ’90s).

When talking pictures came into play, music underscored tension, suspense, romance, etc. When pornography first came to film it was underground and silent. That would soon change. Early cinematic releases of adult films tried to mimic those of their Hollywood cousins. Plots and storylines abounded and with them came the need for music to accentuate each scene. Aaaahhh, but porno had something that those blockbusters didn’t . . . SEX! As the blue movies progressed, so did their soundtracks. It went from actual film scores to the all too familiar, boom chuck a wah wah that most people are familiar with. Modern-day porno, in an attempt to mimic the popular “reality” format, frequently eliminates music to create a more voyeuristic atmosphere. Join me on a journey through the history of music in pornography, as we discuss scoring the horizontal mamba.

This scenario pushes Bear Bjorn to act on Ulrika’s behalf doing justice to her in his own hands as he gets rid of the lumberjack, eventually wrapping up the love circle.

In the late 70’s, under the influence of the punk and post punk movement, Japanese young filmmakers started to make their own films on Super 8, among them ISHII Sogo, YAMAMOTO Masashi and TSUKAMOTO Shinya. They made new generation films in an original DIY style. Inspired by this new independent film movement, the medical student KAWARAGI Hironao made his first film “RAN-Easter”. It combined punk and new wave music with Japanese primitive images and Japanese art performance (Japanese Butoh dance and Noh theatre), and he depicted his trauma as an immoral fantasy, based on his own mother complex. In the film, a mother-fucker fucked his mother and killed her, then he cut off her genitals and masturbated with them. He called the film a “visual scandal” but when famous director OSHIMA Nagisa saw it as a judge at an independent film competition, he called it an “inexcusable film!”. After this film, Kawaragi started to make the blockbuster Super 8 cyberpunk / SF movie “Crazy Dolls”, but the film fell by the wayside. Kawaragi quit film making after the defeat and became a doctor. He died in 2000 from leukaemia. “RAN-Easter” is the only completed film that he left.

Im Zentrum stehen die Fragen, was Pornographie für Jugendliche bedeutet, das heißt, warum sie wie viel und was gucken bzw. nicht gucken und wie Pornographie auf sie wirkt. Welche Gefahren sehen sie für sich und andere und welche Bedeutung haben Altersbeschränkungen und Verbote für sie, in welchem Zusammenhang steht Pornographie zu ihrer eigenen Sexualität und wie sind die geschlechtsspezifischen Unterschiede. Pornographie wird (auch) moralisch, politisch und in Bezug auf das transportierte Menschen- und Frauenbild erörtert. Außerdem beschreibt und bewertet ein Sexualpädagoge den Pornokonsum bei Jugendlichen. Diese verwechselten in der Regel eben nicht Fiktion und Realität und seien “nicht doofer, verführbarer oder desorientierbarer als Erwachsene.”

Therewith, Clover delivers an essential formula of the genre and the foundation for further assumptions. Women are horror’s favourite victims but also its heroes. The phallus, indicator of social power, becomes a flexible object in horror: The chainsaw in the “final girl’s” hands allows a different look on the cultural norms of Western societies – the genre undermines heterosexual attribution. It is with that theory in mind, that Judith Halberstam develops a queer reading of the genre and illustrates along the “Chucky” series how explicitly sexuality runs through horror and which sexual vicissitudes the genre offers. Those theoretic assumptions are proven with citations from well-known horror films and confronted with statements of renowned filmmakers. Thus, the documentary is the first to lead a discourse between film theory and film practice. Wes Craven, John Carpenter and Tom Savini comment on their films and their fans. Bruce Campbell explains why he depicts a male victim in the “Evil Dead” movies. Joe Hill criticizes “torture porn” because of its shallowness, whereas Neil Marshall elucidates why “The Descent” consciously plays with audience’s expectations. The documentary concludes that there is more to the genre than the sum of its effects. Horror is utterly unique.

Only few isolated excerpts help with the classification of what is presented, which wildly oscillates between pornography and experimental art. McElhinney denies to fulfill the pragmatic function of pornography by not addressing a clearly defined target audience: The three erotic episodes of the “Story of the Eye” show a gay, a lesbian and a heterosexual encounter, with various fetishes are being addressed. A film against the narrow-minded mentality, a film for an audience in the mood for an adventure – a film, that even Bataille would have liked!

This mysterious, inventive film from Singapore uses a taboo subject – the sexual relationship between a male teacher and male student – to explore the fallout from an all-consuming love affair. Inspired by true events, “Solos” was banned in its home country for sexual explicitness and tells its story from a distance, giving its characters, who remain nameless, an iconic feel.

What makes “Solos” most radical to 21st century audiences is precisely what makes it cinematic to the core: There is no dialogue. But it would be incorrect to call the film silent, as it makes full use of ambient noise, creating an aural atmosphere that equals the striking digital cinematography. Most of the film is shot in static long-shot, making the silence of the characters palpable and their emotions raw. Though it focuses largely on the prolonged breakup of the student and teacher, the film gives much of its weight to the boy’s mother, who acutely feels the loss of her son. Scenes of the teacher and student having sex, arguing and eating are juxtaposed with scenes of the mother, alone and in her omnipresent nightgown, retreating deeper into her world of isolation and melancholy.

Co-directors Kan Lume and Zihan Loo (who wrote the screenplay and also plays the student) demonstrate a flair for poetic imagery, deadpan humor and, most importantly, profound sympathy for their characters.

“Tearoom” consists of footage shot by the police in the course of a crackdown on public sex in the American Midwest. In the summer of 1962, the Mansfield, Ohio Police Department photographed men in a restroom under the main square of the city. The cameramen hid in a closet and watched the clandestine activities through a two-way mirror. The film they shot was used in court as evidence against the defendants, all of whom were found guilty of sodomy, which at that time carried a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in the state penitentiary. The original surveillance footage shot by the police came into the possession of director William E. Jones while he was researching this case for a documentary project. The unedited scenes of ordinary men of various races and classes meeting to have sex were so powerful that the director decided to present the footage with a minimum of intervention. “Tearoom” is a radical example of film presented “as found” for the purpose of circulating historical images that have otherwise been suppressed.

This Hammer-flavored gothic outing (originally titled “Daughters Of Dracula”) involves the sanguinary exploits of two female vampires who bed down together in a queen-sized coffin by day and seduce male and female victims by moonlight, leading to lots of steamy soft-core sex scenes followed by copious amounts of the red stuff. One of their victims falls in love with Moore, even as he grows increasingly anemic due to her nutritional requirements. Moody photography and lush sets enhance the film’s fatally hedonistic atmosphere, and the stars assay temptingly feline performances that render their characters’ seductive powers chillingly real. This was a late entry in the European “lesbian vampire” sub-genre, a 1970s phenomenon made popular by such filmmakers as Jean Rollin and Jess Franco that made a comeback in the late 1990s.

3. Pornfilmfestival Berlin 2008

Unterhaltsam, horizonterweiternd, lustig, schamlos, verblüffend und sexy – und schon zum 3. Mal in der Stadt! Während draußen der Winter naht, wird es vom 22.-26.10.2008 in den Kinos Moviemento, Eiszeit und Xenon immer wieder heiß, denn dann gastiert dort das 3. Pornfilmfestival Berlin 2008!

Seit 2006 hat es sich das Pornfilmfestival Berlin auf die Fahnen geschrieben, den cineastischen Sex aus der Schmuddelecke herauszuholen – und die vielfältigen Erscheinungsformen der filmischen Fleischeslust auf die große Leinwand zu bringen. Bereits 2006 und 2007 entstand so eine bunte Vielfalt unterschiedlichster künstlerischer Herangehensweisen an die großen Themen um Körper, Lust, Liebe und Sexualität. Auch die 2008er Auslese unseres Programms beginnt, dem Thema entsprechend, mit einem big bang: Bereits zur Eröffnung zeigt die Pulp-Fiction-Retroporno-Phantasmagorie »The Bad Luck Betties« des amerikanischen Alt.Porn-Autorenfilmers Winkytiki, was Porno so alles sein kann: sexy und clever, lustig, und immer wieder auf überraschende Weise gegen den Mainstream-Strich gebürstet.

Dieses Jahr findet zum dritten Mal der Internationale Kurzfilmwettbewerb statt, der Blue Movie Award ist dotiert mit einem Preisgeld von 500 Euro. Die internationale Jury ist hochkarätig besetzt mit der bekannten Berliner Schauspielerin Susanne Sachsse, dem New Yorker Regisseur Joe Gallant und der Pariser Regisseurin und Photographin Manon des Gryeux. Ausserdem wird der maleflixx.tv Award für den besten schwulen Film des gesamten Festivals vergeben.

Unser Spielfilmprogramm bietet unter anderem neue Filme wie Eon McKais »The Doll Underground«, Todd Verows »Where Your Heart Should Be« und Maria Beattys »Post Apocalyptic Cowgirls« sowie das Spielfilmdebüt »The Lost Door« des renommierten Kunstfotografen Roy Stuart. Außerdem zeigen wir die »Brady Bunch«-Parodie »Not The Bradys XXX« und den radikalen Avantgarde-Porno von Kris Kramski »America XXX«. Der Abschlussfilm »Mu Zi Mei« zeigt ein aufregendes Bild der aktuellen sexuellen Revolution in China.

Im Dokumentarfilmprogramm läuft unter anderem die Deutschlandpremiere von »Larry Flynt: The Right To Be Left Alone«, dem einzigartig intimen Portrait des Hustler-Gründers und Aktivisten für die Pressefreiheit von Joan Brooker-Marks. Außerdem gibt es zwei sehr unterschiedliche Frauen zu entdecken: die Hermaphroditin und Prostituierte Claudette in dem Schweizer Beitrag »Claudette« von Sylvie Cachin sowie das sehr persönliche Portrait über die junge Pornodarstellerin »Nina« des Franzosen Thibault Staib. Ein breit gefächertes Kurzfilmprogramm bietet etwas für jeden Geschmack, inklusive des beliebten »Fun Porn« Programms.

Wir bieten dieses Jahr eine Reihe von Themenschwerpunkten. Eine spannende Verbindung gehen die 2 Genres Pornographie und Splatterfilm ein. Katharina Klewinghaus’ Dokumentarfilm »Science of Horror – If The Chainsaw Was A Penis« sowie ein Vortrag von Stefan Höltgen (Bonn) dienen dabei als Leitfaden durch unser SplatterPornSpecial – dessen Reichtum sich dann vom vergessenen Meisterwerk »Forced Entry« bis zum unglaublichen Trash von »Edward Penishands« in unseren Spätvorstellungen entdecken lässt. Vom Horrorkino ist es dann nicht mehr weit bis zu den Lesbian Vampires, denen in diesem Jahr ebenfalls eine kleine Filmreihe gewidmet ist. Den Mutationen spüren wir in drei höchst unterschiedlichen Beiträgen von den 70er Jahren bis heute nach. Das Spectrum Asia zeigt mit Filmen aus Japan, Hongkong, Singapur und den Philippinen den ästhetischen wie inhaltlichen Reichtum des asiatischen Sexfilms auf. Dabei freuen wir uns, Werke von international renommierten Filmemachern wie SONO Sion, ZEZE Takahisa oder Khavn de la Cruz zeigen zu können. Aus der weiten Ferne in die (deutschen) Schlafzimmer – dorthin nämlich sucht unser Themenschwerpunkt Sex privat vorzudringen und zu erforschen, wie es denn wirklich zugeht bei uns und unseren Nachbarinnen unter der Decke. Dass es dabei manchmal zu überraschenden Ergebnissen kommt, steht außer Frage – und zeigt sich etwa im historischen Querschnitt durch das Schaffen von Harry S. Morgan, seit über 20 Jahren rasender Reporter und Dokumentarist sämtlicher Facetten deutschen Sexlebens. Das Genre des »privaten« Pornos und seine Entstehung werden kommentiert in einem Vortrag von Stephan Wolf. Einem noch immer tabuisierten Thema – der Sexualität behinderter Menschen – widmet sich schließlich unser Sonderprogramm Sexualbegleitung?. Der Berliner Dokumentarfilm »Die Heide ruft…« gibt Gelegenheit, mit Protagonisten und Beteiligten zu diskutieren. Und in der Reihe Jack Wrangler – Pornolegende wird die unglaubliche, aber wahre Lebensgeschichte jenes Mannes erzählt, dem es gelungen ist, sowohl im schwulen als auch im heterosexuellen Pornofilm zum Superstar zu werden.

Vier sehr verschiedene Regisseure werden in einer Sonderreihe ihre Filme in Berlin persönlich präsentieren: Charles Lum, der schwule Aktivist aus New York zeigt seine »HIV Collection«; die unabhängige Pornoregisseurin Petra Joy stellt ihre neuesten Arbeiten vor; der Found Footage-Experte William E. Jones stellt zwei seiner Arbeiten vor; und schließlich wird der dänische Porno-Pionier Ole Ege porträtiert.

In den verschiedenen Sektionen des Festivals finden sich auch vier Filme aus Israel, die ganz unterschiedliche Blicke ermöglichen. Der Dokumentarfilm »Blue« zeigt die tristen Arbeitsbedingungen von Pornodarstellern, die beiden Filme »Pathways« und »Japan Japan« erweitern die Grenzen des narrativen und experimentellen Films und der erste schwule Hardcore-Porno »My Israeli Platoon« wird beim Pornfilmfestival Berlin seine Weltpremiere erleben. Abseits des abwechslungsreichen Filmprogramms hat das Pornfilmfestival Berlin auch in diesem Jahr ein vielfältiges Programm aus Special Events (u. a. mit einem erotischen Hörspiel), Vorträgen (u. a. zu Porno und Musik) und Workshops (u. a. Japan-Bondage und Fisting für Frauen). Natürlich hat in den langen Festivalnächten unsere legendäre Nachtbar ein vielseitiges Programm zu bieten. Und so kann es vom 22.-26.10.2008 eigentlich nur heißen:
